Our 6th graders had lots of fun today at the SciYinz Chain Reaction Competition at Carnegie Science Center. All teams were given the same task and fake money to buy materials. Students used wheel and axels, levers, ramps, screws, inclined planes, and pulleys to create a multistep machine that would "feed a pet"

Who would have thought today's online event would be longer than one hour...Mrs. Sill certainly didn't! Even though the competition took much longer than anticipated, these America-Bowlers did an AMAZING job competing in the following categories: Pittsburgh, Major Cities, States, Landmarks, Social Media, and Presidents.
A HUGE thank you to Dr. Abbondanza for buying us pizza since I only planned for students to be here in the morning. Maggie brought in Presidential treats to share with the class. Our 3 students who are participating in tomorrow's America Bowl were quick to identify the association! We read about the mythological figure Cupid and learned that he wasn't always analogous to love. Ask your child what Cupid/Eros was originally known for doing! Next we created "bows and arrows" to collect measurement data. Some students wanted to make modifications for improvement, but we ran out of time! Please share any mods made at home if they make an improvement to our initial design. A big THANK YOU to the Allegheny Intermediate Unit 1 and Duquesne University for hosting this year's 5th and 6th grades CalcuSolve. Gifted support students from North Strabane and Cecil competed with students from districts all over Pittsburgh by working through challenging individual and group math problems. North Strabane Intermediate's very own COLESON M. took home 3rd place out of 344 students. |
