6th, 7th and 8th grade students competed at their grade level today at Chartiers-Houston's 24 Math Competition. Students from Avella, Beth Center, Canon-McMillan, Fort Cherry, Burgettstown, McGuffey, Trinity, and Washington school districts competed using the Double-Digit 24 Math Card Game. Congratulations to Canon-McMillan's Lukas for coming in first place in the 6th grade division with a whopping 97 points! Thank you to Mrs. Smith and Chartiers-Houston for hosting the event. We're looking forward to tomorrow's competition for 4th and 5th grade students using the Single Digit 24 Cards! Click on the image below for more information about ExploraVision.
What a great day we had at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens! These environmentally friendly 6th graders had the chance to learn about the Ohio Watershed, native fish species, conduct an aquatic macro-invertebrate study, complete a conservatory scavenger hunt and create an environmental billboard..all in about 2 and half hours! A special thank you to the AIU3 and Phipps Conservatory for working together to make this year's Eco Challenge another great success. Students are looking forward to creating their Fairchild Challenge projects. We have already begun photo-journaling and drawing for our collaborative nature journal. Check out the great photos from today's event at the slideshow below! 2nd and 3rd graders are learning about different types of figurative language. This week students learned about personification and had fun adding creative details to their writing using Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh's Story Maker.
Quote analysis is a skill students need to become efficient writers and researchers. After picking from a number of quotes students were tasked with making a personal "I am..." statement that demonstrated an understanding of the quote and an application of the wisdom. Students then made a "Difference Maker" -a single word or brief phrase that would link the quote to their personal analysis.
Here are a few of the beautiful pieces that are hanging in my room for the year!
