Rotation 1: Wild Wetlands Program in the Lagoon We started with a hands-on water testing activity. Students took water samples from Turtle Pond and tested for pH, phosphate, and nitrate levels. Next we listened to a researcher from Duquesne University present about watersheds. The last portion of this rotation involved creating a scientific journal and making observations. Rotation 2: Phipps Scavenger Hunt Students were tasked with finding various plants from around the gardens. We explored Palm Court, the Stove Room (butterfly room), the Serpentine Room, the Tropical Fruit and Spice Room, and the Tropical Forest Conservatory. Rotation 3: Nature Writing and the Edible Garden Students received instruction on writing techniques, sampled mentor texts, then explored the Edible Garden to find inspiration for creative writing. It was too nice not to eat outside today.

Station 1: Amazing Creatures Program
Station 2: Scavenger Hunt: Our favorite finds included the Flamingo Plant, Koi fish, and the Butterfly Garden, but were stumped and could not find a palm beginning with the letter Z. Turns out there is an elusive Zombie Palm somewhere in the gardens! Station 3: Plant Exploration: We learned the difference between dicots and monocots then looked for both examples in the gardens.
5th and 6th graders created personal flags and speeches after learning about color psychology used in marketing and public speaking basics. These "speeches" are our first attempt at regulating the verbal and non-verbal skills needed to succeed when speaking in front of a group. They did an amazing job at attempt #1. Look forward to mid-year and end of year public speaking posts to see some anticipated growth! Sixth Grade

4th Grade Gifted Support students learned about their unique giftedness today. Similar to the activity 2nd and 3rd grade students completed on Tuesday, 4th graders discussed "giftedness" and how to navigate the question: What is being gifted all about? Ask your child to explain what each message means!
