Team Mean Joe Greene presented their Powering Pittsburgh/Heinz Field project to a duo of judges at Waynesburg University. Tommy, Jorma, Dominic and Jack's project proposed to power Pittsburgh by growing and harvesting algae from the three rivers. Did you know that algae is a bio-fuel and that it consumes large amounts of carbon dioxide? Team Mean Joe Greene did! The boys did a fantastic job researching how the environmentally friendly energy source could be applied to our city and presenting the details. AMAZING WORK!
3 groups of 5th-grade detectives tried to save the Robie House...2 succeeded! Take a look at the pictures and ask your child which clue was their favorite! Thanks to the Heinz History Center and the AIU we had a chance to explore some awesome exhibits while completing 4 challenges: 1: Who Am I? at the Pittsburgh A Tradition of Innovation exhibit -Students answered Who am I? questions while viewing the exhibit. 2: If I Could Talk at the Special Collections exhibit -Students created a story that an object in the Special Collections might tell if they could talk. 3: Heroes and Sheroes at the Ruth E. Carter exhibit -Students created questions and answers based on the text and artifacts from Carter's work in the movies. 4: Sports Trivia at the Sports Museum exhibit -Teams developed research-based questions and answered based on articles in the exhibit. How do you get an elephant back onto a train? (Please don't wait for a punch line, this is not a joke...just today's engineering design challenge with simple machines!) Check out the lesson from TeachEngineering and ask your child about their proposal.
Hydrology and Water TestingThanks to Geologist Nancy Pointen, Physical Scientist Jay Hawkins, Ecologist Brian Dailey and Hydrologist Sarah Kreitzer, we got to explore some pretty amazing things in the creek. Testing for water flow, pH levels and even observing insects -so much fun! WatershedsWatershed Specialist Jennifer Dan did an awesome job helping us to learn about watersheds. Ask your child to share something he or she learned! Drones and Thermal Sensing CamerasVery cool stuff! A special thank you to Geologist Joe Montrella, Civil Engineer Stefanie Self, and Physical Scientist Luke Monette from the OSMRE. They showed us (and even let us play with) technology used in the field!
Water Cycle Bracelets and Scavenger-HuntWe learned about the different stages in the never-ending water cycle, made a bracelet to model the cycle, then snapped photos of the different stages we could find around us! |
