The titles for the 2024 Children's Choice Awards have been released! Each year the Allegheny County Library Association (ACLA) and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU) celebrates reading and encourages school and public library collaboration by selecting 8 new and acclaimed books for our students to read and judge. Teams of students across Allegheny and Washington counties read then vote on their favorite new book. Students will gather together for a Battle-of-the-Books type competition at the end of year. This event usually includes author and illustrator visits as well as literacy themed activities.
I am able to order 4 copies of each book for our students in third-sixth grades to share. Please take a moment to let me know if your child is interested in participating by completing this form. *Students should read 5 of the 8 titles if they'd like to participate in the CCA Competition at the end of the year. Canon-McMillan's 5th grade curriculum includes a unit on ancient civilizations in North America. 5th grade gifted support students extended their learning on ancient Mayan, Incan, and Aztec civilizations by visiting the oldest cultural site in North America, Meadowcroft Rockshelter. Students explored the dig site and even helped scientists identify pieces of shells, bones, and flint from rock samples. After learning about the characteristics of a civilization in school and visiting the Rockshelter the students will be creating a piece of media comparing the cultures that inhabited the Rockshelter to the ones studied in class.
