Canon-McMillan's 5th grade curriculum includes a unit on ancient civilizations in North America. 5th grade gifted support students extended their learning on ancient Mayan, Incan, and Aztec civilizations by visiting the oldest cultural site in North America, Meadowcroft Rockshelter. Students explored the dig site and even helped scientists identify pieces of shells, bones, and flint from rock samples. After learning about the characteristics of a civilization in school and visiting the Rockshelter the students will be creating a piece of media comparing the cultures that inhabited the Rockshelter to the ones studied in class.
