The titles for the 2024 Children's Choice Awards have been released! Each year the Allegheny County Library Association (ACLA) and the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU) celebrates reading and encourages school and public library collaboration by selecting 8 new and acclaimed books for our students to read and judge. Teams of students across Allegheny and Washington counties read then vote on their favorite new book. Students will gather together for a Battle-of-the-Books type competition at the end of year. This event usually includes author and illustrator visits as well as literacy themed activities.
I am able to order 4 copies of each book for our students in third-sixth grades to share. Please take a moment to let me know if your child is interested in participating by completing this form. *Students should read 5 of the 8 titles if they'd like to participate in the CCA Competition at the end of the year. Canon-McMillan's 5th grade curriculum includes a unit on ancient civilizations in North America. 5th grade gifted support students extended their learning on ancient Mayan, Incan, and Aztec civilizations by visiting the oldest cultural site in North America, Meadowcroft Rockshelter. Students explored the dig site and even helped scientists identify pieces of shells, bones, and flint from rock samples. After learning about the characteristics of a civilization in school and visiting the Rockshelter the students will be creating a piece of media comparing the cultures that inhabited the Rockshelter to the ones studied in class.
6th Graders participated in the SciYinz Chain Reaction Competition at The Carnegie Science Center. Our students were up against 25 other teams of middle and high school students from Washington and Allegheny counties. Update: North Strabane Team 3 earned the LONGEST RUNNING TIME AWARD! Another fun day at Phipps! Our 6th graders had fun at today's Middle School and High School Eco Challenge. This group did a terrific job representing Canon-McMillan while out and about in Pittsburgh! 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students explored Phipps Conservatory today during this year's Elementary Eco Challenge. We rotated between three learning stations: "Pollinator Paradise," "Phipps Scavenger Hunt," and "Water Wonders". Today's event was a kickoff event for the 2023-2024 Fairchild Challenge. The 2023-2024 Fairchild Challenge begins with a Biological Sculpture: Beetles and Blossoms project. Students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades are researching and writing about the importance of their selected beetle to the forest ecosystem. Students are also creating sustainably crafted ornaments to complete the first challenge. We had a fun morning at Trinity celebrating reading! Our 4 teams moved through stations earning points as they traveled. Congratulations to all participants, especially the team of Brooklynn, Maddie, and Rylie...they came in 2nd place overall!
Thanks to the South Hills Gifted Consortium and Thomas Jefferson School District for hosting the event. The 24 Math algebra, integer, fraction, decimal, and double-digit cards were intense. Everyone did a great job. |
